The Observer, Karsha Monastery, Ladakh, India (2006)
Karsha was once a Buddhist monastery of great importance. Today it is a lonely, isolated place deep in the Zanskar mountain range. Once a year people from far flung settlements gather at the monastery for the Karsha festival. A rare chance to interact with those from other villages and to witness the retelling of the history of Zanskar's greatness through elaborate theatrical productions. Here a senior monk observes the crowd from his quarters. |
